Este pez fue documentado y clasificado por primera vez en la d\u00e9cada de 1930, en un per\u00edodo de intensa investigaci\u00f3n sobre la biodiversidad marina en el Caribe. Se le dio su nombre cient\u00edfico en honor al buque oceanogr\u00e1fico \"Loreto\", que fue fundamental en la recolecci\u00f3n de espec\u00edmenes de la vida marina en la regi\u00f3n. Su coloraci\u00f3n dividida, con la parte delantera p\u00farpura y la trasera amarilla, con una distintiva mancha negra en la aleta dorsal, lo hizo
